Master Class with Per Bloland: The Electro-magnetically Prepared Piano

04/24/2012 - 4:15pm

The Electro-magnetically Prepared Piano

For over 50 years, composers and performers have been going inside of the piano to create new sounds. From Henry Cowell and his strumming to John Cage and his screws, wire and plastic spoons wedged between strings, such experimental practices are now commonplace. But new technology yields new possibilities for the piano. Composer Per Bloland will demonstrate his use of transducers to create electro-magnetic waves to resonate the piano strings, creating some of the most hauntingly beautiful sounds.

Professor Bloland will be joined Classical Saxophonist Eliot Gattegno who will perform with the electro-magnetic piano and will also give an introduction to a website soon to be launched that is dedicated to modern and extended techniques for Saxophone.
