The Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Laura Pierce, sings arrangements in the style of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross and the New York Voices. Students also create innovative arrangements of their own, which reflect the group’s collective imagination. Improvising games and exercises help orient students to the art of improvising (scat singing). Each week, one or two individual students will rehearse a song they are learning with student accompanists (piano and bass), giving them an opportunity to explore different ways of arranging the song for performance. The group performs in a recital each semester, as well as off-campus. By audition, and open to first year students. Private vocal jazz lessons are encouraged but not required.
Jazz auditions have been confirmed for Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012 from 7 – 9 pm in Bernhard Music Center. Vocal Jazz Ensemble auditions are held in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall, also in the music center.
