The central work on the album, a cantata titled The Far West, is a setting of words by Tim Dlugos, a poet who died of AIDS in 1990 while studying to become a priest. After discovering Dlugos’s poetry in 2006 in a self-published book of poems on the shelves of the Yale library, Zachary Wadsworth found the writing utterly inspiring; even while the poet’s world was destroyed by plague, his work was vivid, hopeful, and full of light. From the front lines of New York’s AIDS crisis, he wrote poetry full of grace. In writing this cantata, Wadsworth hoped to make more people aware of Dlugos’s incredible poetry, and also to build bridges between the sometimes disconnected worlds of contemporary experience and Classical concert music.
