New Eligibility Guidelines for 2017-18

*The application deadline has been changed to Monday, November 27.

*Application Form and Guidelines are available at the Music office in late fall. The competition takes place early in the spring semester. Winners appear as soloists with the Berkshire Symphony at the fourth regular season concert. For questions please contact the Assistant to the Chair.

*Williams College sophomores, juniors, or seniors (no first-year students).

*Contestants must be recommended by their instrumental or vocal teacher or ensemble director, and are expected to contribute to department music-making.

*Contestants must be: 1) currently taking individual music lessons at Williams in the instrumental or vocal area in which they are competing, and/or 2) currently participating in a Williams faculty-directed (conducted) department ensemble (faculty-coached piano accompanying or chamber music for pianists). Contestants are expected to participate in these ensembles throughout the school year.

*Contestants who are on study-abroad programs or leave from the college during the fall semester must take individual lessons and/or participate in a faculty-directed department ensemble during the spring semester.

*Past winners of the Berkshire Symphony Student Soloist Competition are not eligible to compete.

*All contestants, including those on study-abroad or leave from the college during the fall semester, must meet the application deadline.

*If contestants or their teachers have any questions, they should consult with the department chair by the beginning of the school year.

“The Berkshire Symphony is comprised of Williams College students, distinguished Artist Associates, and area professionals. Throughout the year, students and teachers work hand in hand in an environment that honors hard work and fosters respect. The programs each year expose the students to a broad range of symphonic repertoire. With musical selections spanning four centuries, and under the guidance of our excellent faculty, students experience ensemble playing on a level rarely offered in comparable educational settings.”

— Ronald Feldman, director
