Anicia C. Timberlake

Anicia Timberlake received her Ph.D. in History and Literature of Music from UC Berkeley in 2015. Her dissertation, “The Politics and Practice of Children’s Music Education in the German Democratic Republic (1949-1989),” investigates music pedagogy in socialist Germany beyond state-mandated propaganda songs, showing how music teachers, musicologists, and composers used non-texted forms of music to shape children to their own ideals of the socialist citizen. Anicia’s other research interests include Schlager (a German pop genre) and child stars in contemporary America. Outside of work, she plays the viola, the violin, and the bass, and enjoys the outdoors. Anicia is from Santa Cruz, CA.
